До сих пор неясно, что такое психические расстройства и каковы причинные пути, которые приводят к ним. Это делает трудным решить, какими должны быть цели и результаты психотерапии. В данной статье, описаны основные типы целей и результаты, а также представлен краткий обзор некоторых из основных результатов исследования этих типов. Они включают редукцию симптомов, личные цели и результаты с точки зрения пациента, улучшение качества жизни, промежуточные результаты в зависимости от теоретических концепций психотерапевта, отрицательные результаты, которые следует избегать и экономические показатели. Наряду с превалированием систем DSM и МКБ для диагностики, большинство исследований были сфокусированы на редукции симптомов. Такое значительное количество работ с сотнями рандомизированных исследований показали, что для большинства психических расстройств существует эффективная психотерапия. Также есть исследование, показывающее, что психотерапия может привести к улучшению качества жизни при большей части психических расстройств. Однако существует сравнительно мало исследований по результатам, определенным пациентами, промежуточным показателям, отрицательным результатам и экономическим показателям. Пациенты, родственники, психотерапевты, работодатели, медицинские работники и общество в целоv – каждый имеет их собственные точки зрения на цели и результаты психотерапии. Точка зрения пациента должна иметь больший приоритет, а также необходима стандартизация измерений результатов в исследованиях.
