На сегодняшний день существует не так много лонгитюдных исследований, посвященных вопросу влияния статуса национального меньшинства, проживающего в неблагополучном районе, на риск неблагоприятном исхода при психических расстройствах. Не изучены механизмы, которые могут привести к такому риску. Мы исследовали, как статус меньшинства влияет на течение и исход четырех психических расстройств в этнически гомогенной выборке молодых пуэрториканцев. Мы изучили модели риска для большого депрессивного расстройства (БДР), генерализованного тревожного расстройства (ГТР), симптомов тревоги и депрессии (СТД) и психологического дистресса у пуэрториканских детей и подростков (5-13 лет), а затем у них же в более взрослом возрасте (15-29 лет). Исследование проводилось в двух городах: в одном из них (на острове Пуэрто-Рико) дети воспитывались в качестве национального большинства, а в другом (Нью-Йорк, район Южный Бронкс) – в статусе национального меньшинства. Исходно исследование проводилось на стратифицированной выборке из 2491 молодых пуэрториканцев из двух городов. После первичной оценки (Волна 1), каждый из юных участников вместе с опекуном ежегодно обследовались в течение двух лет, таким образом, были получены результаты для трех временных точек (Волны 1-3). С апреля 2013 по август 2017 участников приглашали на интервью в рамках Волны 4, таким образом, в исследовании приняли участие 2004 человека в возрасте от 15 до 29 лет (чувствительность с поправкой на пригодность = 82,8%).
